Alberta Government Invests in Co-op Sector Growth Through NRED Program

NRED Grant to Power ACCA’s Outreach, Connection, and Awareness Efforts Across Alberta

EDMONTON, AB – The Alberta Community & Co-operative Association (ACCA) has been awarded a grant through the Government of Alberta’s Northern and Regional Economic Development (NRED) program, supporting a bold initiative to grow the province’s co-operative sector and strengthen local economic resilience.

This funding will support a province-wide Co-op Sector Growth & Connection Tour, alongside targeted initiatives to build awareness of the co-operative business model and encourage community-led solutions across Alberta. Through this work, ACCA will help co-operatives expand their impact, connect with new partners, and develop the tools they need to thrive, particularly in smaller or underserved communities.

“This program is about empowering Alberta's co-operative sector with the tools and connections they need to strengthen local economies. By supporting co-ops, Alberta’s government is helping Albertans create lasting solutions that reflect the unique strengths and needs of their regions.” Matt Jones, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade

ACCA’s initiative is part of a record-breaking $9.8 million investment in 81 projects through the 2024–25 NRED program—more than triple the program’s usual annual funding. The expanded program enables organizations, municipalities, and First Nations to pursue projects that create jobs, attract investment, and support long-term regional development.

“This investment supports the growth of co-operatives as a powerful economic and social solution—especially in smaller communities where traditional options fall short,” said Corinne Remple, Executive Director of ACCA. “It allows us to amplify the work being done on the ground and provide visibility, connection points, and supports that help co-ops take root and thrive. ACCA is proud to help lead this effort and ensure more Albertans can turn to the co-operative model to meet their local needs.”

The NRED program continues to evolve in response to community feedback. In 2024–25, improvements include a simplified application process, increased funding caps of up to $300,000 per project, multi-year funding eligibility, and broader access for not-for-profit organizations and Indigenous-led initiatives.

ACCA is proud to be selected as a 2024–25 Alberta Government NRED grant recipient, supporting three major initiatives through our Legacy Builder Program: the Co-op Sector Growth & Connection Tour, the Alberta Co-operative Conference, and our new marketing campaign to raise co-op awareness.

Thanks to support from the Alberta Government’s NRED program—and the incredible backing of our Legacy Builders—ACCA is driving forward bold initiatives that will strengthen Alberta’s co-operative sector for years to come.

We’re just $10,000 away from fully meeting our matching goal.
